What is Étoile?
Étoile is a simple app designed to help dancers document and celebrate their training journey. You can set goals, track classes, record practice sessions, build routines, and reflect on your progress over time.
Not because every hour needs to be measured. But because every hour matters.
Whether you're an adult beginner preparing for your first pirouette, a dedicated student training multiple times a week, or a professional dancer refining your craft, Étoile exists to accompany the countless hours behind every performance.The hours nobody sees. The hours that truly make a dancer.
Why does Étoile exist?
For the last ten years, I have been working as a designer in tech. I've helped build products used by millions of people. Products optimized for growth, engagement, efficiency, and scale. Yet I was rarely proud of them.
Over time, I started questioning a belief that exists throughout our industry: that every friction should be removed. Technology promises convenience. We save time, reduce effort, and automate more and more of our lives. But save time for what?The more seamless our tools became, the more disconnected I felt from the things that actually mattered.
I began searching for meaningful friction.The kind that requires patience.
The kind that asks us to slow down.
The kind that helps us become fully present.That search eventually led me deeper into ballet.
Ballet is the opposite of instant gratification.
Progress cannot be rushed. There are no shortcuts. Only repetition, consistency, and intentional practice. The audience sees elegance under the spotlight. The dancer experiences years of effort behind it.
Effortless is built on friction.
As I trained, I searched for an App to help me document my progress. I couldn't find one.
Not because dancers don't need it.
But because dancers are a small audience.
Most products are built for millions.
So, I built one for myself and the dancers in my community. After every exhausting training session, we can take a moment to record our progress - a small ritual that says, "I showed up today."
Some things should not be automated.Some moments deserve to be felt. Étoile was built around that belief.
For Those Who Keep Showing Up
Most products begin with a market size.
Étoile begins with a community.
I don't dream about millions of users.
I don't dream about growth charts or venture capital. I dream about the dancer who opens Étoile after a difficult class.The dancer who feels stuck but keeps going. The dancer who looks back after a year and realizes how far they've come.
I want Étoile to become a companion for dancers who choose the long path. A place to document effort. A place to celebrate consistency.If one day thousands of dancers use Étoile, that would be wonderful. But if ten dancers use it every day and genuinely love it, that would be enough.
Because Étoile was never built to reach everyone. It was built for the people who understand that becoming a dancer is not a destination. It's a lifelong practice.
